Peter Vilbig has been a journalist, a fiction writer, and a songwriter. Yet in a journey of many twists and turns, the common theme has always been this: Peter Vilbig is a storyteller and a writer.
His latest musical incarnation extends his range in both these domains. His songs combine strong narrative, lyrical writing, and an honest and unvarnished vocal style. His songs tell stories, often about the American scene, in evocative language, about subject matter that can’t easily be filed on a single shelf.
As a journalist Peter covered the contra war in Central America for the Boston Globe, and crime and politics for The Miami Herald, and was later an investigative reporter for a news service in Washington, DC.
His short fiction has appeared in Tin House, 3:AM Magazine, Shenandoah, and Drunken Boat, among other publications.
Peter is an eclectic reader and listener. He’s recently been swept up in the novels of Roberto Bolaño, Anna Burns, and Atticus Lish, and the poetry of Anne Carson. He’s lately been bowled over by songs by Jason Isbell, Joanna Newsom, Kurt Vile, and Julia Jacklin, to name just a few.
